Frequently Asked
Questions
Q. What is the
relationship between United Way of Hancock County and
United Way of America?
A. United Way of
Hancock County is an independent organization, governed
by a local board of volunteers. United Way raises funds
to support more than 40 programs and services in Hancock County.
Local United Ways pay membership dues to receive
services from United Way of America such as national
advertising, marketing and communication tools, and
training.
Q. How are programs
and services selected to receive support from United
Way?
A.
United Way of Hancock County funds programs and services
that address our community’s most pressing needs while
assuring that basic services necessary for a positive
quality of life are maintained for all of our citizens.
Q.
Why is my contribution so important?
A.
Every dollar is important. Many of the
services provided in Hancock County are made possible
because of your continued support. United Way of
Hancock County funds many programs with your donation.
Hancock County is also fortunate to provide preventive
and developmental resources to our community.
Q.
What if I have a special interest that I would like to
support?
A.
United Way of Hancock County has determined
Impact Areas for funding. You may direct your investment to one or
more of these areas by indicating this on an Investor's
Choice form. Request this form from your work place
campaign chair.
Q.
Why do some agencies charge fees for services that my
investment supports?
A.
Each agency is run independently and may charge fees for
program services or memberships. They offer many
programs for those who need financial assistance and
many programs are available at reduced fees or for free.
United Way contributions ensure that those who cannot
afford it still get the services they need.
Q.
How much money actually goes to the programs and
services?
A.
The majority of money raised during campaign is granted
to programs and services in Hancock County. Only 13.26%*
is spent on United Way administration and campaign
costs.
*from 2004 IRS
Form 990
Q.
How do I know that the money really goes to people who
need help the most?
A.
Each year 32 local volunteers take a close look at
programs and services requesting funding. These programs
are scrutinized for effectiveness, efficiency and
whether or not they meet identified needs in our
community.
Q.
Why is the campaign goal usually higher each year?
A.
Operating costs of providing needed services increase
each year due to several factors: increased number of
people needing the services, public demand for
innovative programs, and inflation.
Q.
My spouse and I both work. Should we both give?
A.
We ask that each employed person donate based upon his
or her income. When donations are made on this basis, it
allows employees to contribute their individual portion
of the community responsibility. You can also combine
your gifts for Gaslight Society purposes by filling out
the appropriate section on your Investment Form.
Q.
What happens if I change jobs while giving through
payroll deduction?
A.
Your payroll deduction will stop when you are no longer
on the payroll. When you begin your new job, ask for a
new Investment Form or contact the United
Way office. Many employers provide Investment Forms
during the initial hiring process.
Q.
I work in Hancock County, but live in another community.
Where do I give?
A.
United Way asks that you give where you work because
payroll deductions are a convenient way to contribute.
You can, however, still have donations designated to the
United Way in your county of residence, which, in turn,
will distribute money to their programs and services. A
designation form must be completed to arrange this
transaction. Consider splitting your investment between
your home and employment counties!
Q.
I work in Findlay, but live in another community in
Hancock County. How can I tell if people in my community
benefit from the services provided?
A.
A “Beneficiary Report” is provided in this book. It
shows the number of unduplicated people who have used
United Way programs from each partner agency. Many
companies are also provided with a specific beneficiary
report that shows the services used by their employees.
Q.
Why should I give when I do not use the services of any
of the agencies?
A.
United Way supports numerous programs and services that
are important to all of us living and working in Hancock
County. Someone you know - family, friend, neighbor - is
probably receiving services from a United Way program.
Most of us will have occasion to call upon an agency at
some point in our lives. These services improve our
overall quality of life and improve the community as a
whole.
Q.
Why do some agencies that receive United Way dollars
still hold fundraisers?
A.
United Way contributions are raised for programs and
services that are determined as high priorities in this
community. Agencies need to hold fundraisers to support
other aspects of their organization such as capital
expenditures, special projects, or unexpected expenses.
Q.
Are United Way contributions tax deductible?
A.
Yes, if you itemize. However, there are certain
limitations. Specific questions should be addressed to
your financial advisor.
Q. I
would like to volunteer. How can I find out what
agencies need help?
A.
Almost all agencies rely on volunteer help. Call the
Volunteer Center at 419-423-1775 and ask where your time
and energy could be best put to use.
